Simply put, an unhealthy mind generally results in an unhealthy body. They are interconnected. For example, people who worry a lot tend to suffer from stomach related disorders. Likewise those who are under great stress tend to suffer from heart related illnesses. Chinese medicine states that emotions correspond with organs; grief resides in the lungs, anger in the liver and so on. Drumming has a number of affects on the body. There are many journeys in life and mine brought me and my family to America when I was 17 to start a new life. I have resonated with Native American culture since childhood and have always felt a pull to immerse myself in the sounds and spirit of the tribes. I bought my first drum when I was 26 years old. It was a Sioux ceremonial drum. Soon after I bought an Alaskan Fire drum. I had no idea how to play them and for many years I lacked the confidence to try...and so a silent conversation began while I searched for a healing meditation. Over the years, as my spiritual journey continued, the drums called to me louder and louder until finally in 2014, I took a drumming class from Spirit Hawk of the Ojibwa Nation. Around the same time I also was given the name StrongHeart by Chief White Buffalo, at a gathering in Alcona County, MI. It was then that the long silence was over and StrongHeart DrumMedicine emerged. Today I play in yoga studios, churches and private residences in the mid-Michigan area with my wife, Kellie. When a loved one passes away, it can be very difficult for family members and friends to decide on a funeral home, pick out a casket, or even have the financial capacity to provide a traditional service. For many, having a non-traditional memorial service can help the grieving process, provide healing, and be therapeutic in a way that a traditional venue cannot provide. It is our goal to provide a healthier approach to saying good-bye to loved ones as they transition into the next phase of spirit. Unlike a traditional funeral, which occurs a week or two of the beloved’s passing, a Celebration of Life event can be held weeks or even months afterward. In the transition of death, we leave our physical bodies behind, and our Spirit, the essence of who we are, continues on our journey. This journey is the evolution and development of our soul. In this, death is not the end. It is the beginning of a new stage. Instead of the somber mourning that is typical of funerals, a Celebration of Life event is about embracing and celebrating the individual’s passions, accomplishments, and legacy.
